Ukraine leaps into unknown after comic elected president

Image
Ukraine leapt into the unknown Monday after comedian Volodymyr Zelensky was elected president on promises of change but with just a vague blueprint of what he might do as leader. Zelensky, whose previous political experience was playing the president on a TV show, crushed incumbent Petro Poroshenko in a stinging rebuke to the establishment fuelled by voters' anger over war with separatists and social injustice. Ukrainians looked to the future with hope and anxiety after the performer took 73 percent of the vote on Sunday, according to nearly complete official results. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2UylzrR

Tesla plans to have a fleet of robotic taxis roaming the streets without drivers next year, Elon Musk has said. The claim is just the latest in a series of exciting pronouncements from the chief executive, who has repeatedly missed his own targets. Pelosi fails to back immediate impeachment of Trump - in sharp contrast to other senior Democrats

Nancy Pelosi has urged caution to those Democrats pushing for the immediate impeachment of Donald Trump, a move that puts her at odds with a number of high profile and influential members of her party. As Democrats consider whether or not to pursue impeachment, perhaps the most consequential decision the party will take over the next 18 months other than its selection of a presidential candidate, the House speaker said it was “important to know that the facts regarding holding the president accountable can be gained outside of impeachment hearings”.While condemning Mr Trump’s “highly unethical and unscrupulous behaviour” as revealed in Robert Mueller’s report, Ms Pelosi warned her party not to become overly obsessed with the specific way it responded, as the party prepared for congressional hearings on the president.“While our views range from proceeding to investigate the findings of the Mueller report or proceeding directly to impeachment, we all firmly agree that we should proceed do

Donald Trump takes legal action to block release of his financial records

Image
Donald Trump and his businesses sued the Democratic chairman of the House Oversight committee on Monday to block a subpoena requesting the president's financial records. It is the latest move in a fierce tussle between the White House and Democrats in Congress amid allegations about the president's finances. In a court filing in Washington, the president's lawyers argued congressman Elijah Cummings "has no legislative purpose" to issue the subpoena and accused Democrats of using their majority in Congress to harass him.   “The Democratic Party, with its newfound control of the US House of Representatives, has declared all-out political war against President Donald J Trump," the lawsuit stated. “Subpoenas are their weapon of choice.” The lawsuit asked the court to block a subpoena issued to Mr Trump’s accounting firm, Mazars, last week demanding several years of the president's financial statements. Sri Lanka bombings: 'international network' linked to attack as local Islamist group blamed

Image
Apreviously obscure Islamist extremist group known only for vandalising Buddhist statues has emerged as the prime suspect behind suicide bomb attacks that killed close to 300 in Sri Lanka. All seven bombers were Sri Lankan but the the scale and coordination of the attacks has led investigators to decide the homegrown group acted with the help of a more sophisticated international terrorist network, such as Islamic State. Sri Lankan officials admitted they had been tipped off earlier this month that the National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ) group was due to attack churches, but the warning failed to stop carnage. Three churches and three hotels were devastated in nearly simultaneous blasts across the island that killed at least 290 and wounded around 500. “We do not believe these attacks were carried out by a group of people who were confined to this country,” said Rajitha Senaratne, the health minister and cabinet spokesman said on Monday. “There was an international network without which the

Easter Massacre Opens Door for Strongman to Return in Sri Lanka

Image
The star-studded event, featuring both President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, underscored the importance of the property beyond simply attracting more tourists: It was also a monument to Sri Lanka’s resurgence following a brutal three-decade civil war between the mostly Buddhist Sinhalese majority and predominately Hindu Tamils. The Shangri-La was built on the old site of the army headquarters, which was shifted outside the city after former strongman Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government won a decisive victory in 2009 with tactics criticized by human-rights activists. While Sri Lankan officials are attributing the attacks to National Thowheed Jamaath, a local Islamist organization, the Islamic State has asserted responsibility, saying it had targeted Christians and citizens of "alliance countries" -- those involved in the U.S.-led military coalition against IS in Syria. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2GCQlvG
